Pen Pals/Postcards

I have been in a lot of different classrooms that have used pen pals and have absolutly LOVED it. I have known people to do it with other people of older grades and then the students eventually meet and become mentors. I have also seen it done with students of the same grade levels but from different places. Another thing that I have seen and even participated in is flat stanely. I haven't actually read the book, but I have had to take flat stanely with me plenty of places.

I also wanted to comment on the postcards that we have to create. I think that this is a great idea, if used in the right sence. If the postcards are used to share information that is educational, then it would be a wonderful idea. I think this boy is going to be so excited once he gets this box of postcards from us. I hope one day to use idea in my classroom!

I absolutely loved pen pals when I was in school! It was so much fun to write letters and to get letters from someone. I think it would be great to have a pen pal from another state or country. Writing letters is a necessary skill for students to learn, and this activity makes it more exciting and fun to learn!
The postcard idea is fabulous!!! I have had a lot of fun creating this! I know that students any age would enjoy this activity.

I think pen pals is a great idea and a great way to teach letter writing skills. I have been toying with the thought of pen pals every year I have been teaching considering I lived in Las Vegas, NV for three years. I have yet to utilize this benefit (why, I'm not sure). I think students would love to have a 'Las Vegas pen pal' the same way I know the kids in Las Vegas would love one from Iowa. It is such an easy way to allow my students to learn about different cultures and lifestyles, I am really upset with myself for not starting already...there is still half a school year left however...
